Mahler left the Conservatory in 1878 with a diploma but without the silver medal given for outstanding achievement. [15] He then enrolled in the University of Vienna (he had, at his father's insistence, sat and with difficulty passed the " matura ," or entrance examination) and followed courses which reflected his developing interests in literature and philosophy. [6] After leaving the University in 1879, Mahler made some money as a piano teacher, continued to compose, and in 1880 finished a dramatic cantata , Das klagende Lied ("The Song of Lamentation"). This, his first substantial composition, shows traces of Wagnerian and Brucknerian influences, yet includes many musical elements which musicologist Deryck Cooke describes as "pure Mahler." [16] Its first performance was delayed until 1901, when it was presented in a revised, shortened form. [17]

Mahler is a Grand Café located on de Zuidas in Amsterdam in world's most durable building: The Edge. Visit us for lunch, drinks and diner.

And here is a video of the Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 . This piece became famous when it was used in the film Death in Venice in 1971. The performance in this video was given in memory of Raisa Gorbachev, wife of Mikhail Gorbachev (the last leader of the USSR). I think it is a very good piece to choose for a memorial concert.

"Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne,
ich kann mit Worten Dir's nicht sagen.
Nur meine Sehnsucht kann ich Dir klagen
und meine Liebe, meine Wonne!" [4]
